January 1 -The Beginning

“The great discovery is that the Bible is a message system: it’s not simply 66 books penned by 40 authors over thousands of years, the Bible is an integrated whole which bears evidence of supernatural engineering in every detail!” Chuck Missler, Koinonia Institute

That is what we are going to discover as we go on this journey. Happy New Year, friends!

How wonderful is the account of creation? Out of nothing came…everything! It shows the awesome power of God’s word. It is our firm and only sure foundation. How can we expect to live in this world without it? By His spoken word, light was divided from darkness (Gen 1:4). Then verse after verse we read “And God said…and it was so.”

How might our lives change this year if we apply this? If God said it, it must be so. As simple as that. No wrangling, manipulating or stressing required on our part. Let’s see how that might look:

And God said…

Proverbs 1:33

But all who listen to me will live in peace,
untroubled by fear of harm.”

Isaiah 40:29-31

He gives power to the weak
and strength to the powerless.
Even youths will become weak and tired,
and young men will fall in exhaustion.
But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not faint.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

Matthew 11:28-29

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

John 14:27

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:37-39

No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 10:9

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Philippians 4:19

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

2 Peter 1:4

And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.

…and it was so.

That’s just 10 verses. Can you imagine what this year could be like as we add more?

Heavenly Father, we are overwhelmed by what You say about us in Your Word. We do not deserve it but since You said it, it must be so!  Thank You for Your love, grace and mercy. As we embark on this new year reading, digging, and basking in your Word together, may we learn from each other the truth of Your word. May what we read penetrate the very marrow of our being. May Your word be our foundation day in and day out. Give us sweet fellowship with You and with each other. Most importantly, it is our humble desire that You use us, Father, to share your promises to everyone we meet. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

What did God show you today?

  1. God is love. God did not need to create the universe…he chose to out of His deep love. As the creator, God is distinct from His creation. He is eternal; He is in control….already here, on the first few pages, we have the Great I AM. I need to remember, i am not. Praise You Lord for your magnificent creation!!Morgen

  2. Only three chapters on this first day of reading, but we already get a peek of things to come. Genesis 3:15 And I will cause hostility between you and the women, and between your offspring and her offspring. HE will strike your head and you will strike his heal. Jesus will eventually crush satan by His death on the cross. Satan will no longer have authority over us. This verse comes to mind; John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.

  3. “God said…”“and that is what happened…”“and God saw that it was good” (Gen. 1:9).Today, it is exactly the same. God is sovereign and everything that happens is because God allowed it to happen. God will make sure that good happens in each situation. Only He knows what is good for us, because He knows our tomorrows and we can only see today.Happy New Year!Hugs, Lori

  4. Passing on what I wrote on the FB page this morning. Happy New Year Sisters! If you want to send me log in info G&P I can make some posts when I write things for the FB group 🙂 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1The very first verse of the Bible, but yet there is so much depth to what is said in these few words. There was a beginning and God was there. He was there before the beginning took place, He created the beginning. The verb “created” used here in this verse is the Hebrew word bara’ and it means “to create” but it is a special kind of create. We can create things. I love to create scrapbooks and journals, I know some of you love to create sewing projects, and wonderful meals, but we can not bara’, this is only a create that our God can do. Where this is used in the Old Testament it never has a human subject, it is a work that is uniquely God’s. If you look up the definition in a Hebrew dictionary you find that bara’ means:to create, shape, forma. always with God as the subjectof heaven and earth of individual man of new conditions and circumstances of transformationsAs I looked at those definitions on the page I thought how fitting that is for our first reading of the year. In the beginning God created…in the beginning of a new year God created. He creates new conditions and circumstances, He creates transformations. Yes, He is the God who created everything we see from nothing, but He can also create new conditions in your life today, this year. He can create transformations in your life. I have areas that I am in desperate need of His transformation and so I am believing Him to create, to bara’ me into only what He can do and what I can not do in my own strength. Isaiah 43:1-3 says:Now this is what the LORD says—the One who created (bara’) you, Jacob, and the One who formed you, Israel—“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;I have called you by your name; you are Mine.I will be with youwhen you pass through the waters, and when you pass through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you.You will not be scorchedwhen you walk through the fire, and the flame will not burn you.For I Yahweh your God,the Holy One of Israel, and your SaviorHe created us, He formed us and He has called each of us by name, we are His. These circumstances and waters and fires we face, He is with us. He is our Savior, He is Yahweh, our covenant God who formed us and breathed the breath of life into us (Genesis 2:7). Our God is the God new beginnings. Today as we start a new year He wants to create a new beginning in each one of us in whatever way we need Him. Happy First day of reading everyone, it’s going to be a great year!

  5. Linda,It does prove that God's plan of salvation was not an afterthought. He knew that even in a perfect world, when sin enters into the picture, we would need rescuing. So thankful!

  6. Hello ladies- I’m not sure how to do this- I just wrote a question and shared some stuff & now I can’t find it??? So grateful to be able to read others responses at least— hopefully I will figure this out …..

  7. Hi, Heather. Your post and the response to it is in the other In The Beginning post above (the one that does not have January 1 in the title). 🙂
