Stop the Cycle!!!!!!! My Early Post for Sat., 3/31/12–Mema Jeanne
( I will be out of town with my hubby from Thurs.-Sun.)
1. A group of individuals most of whom are the same approximate age, having similar problems, attitudes, etc.
2. The term of years ( about 30 ) accepted as the average period between the birth of parents and the birth of their offspring. Judges 2:10 à “After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the LORD or remember the mighty things He had done for Israel.”
This verse somewhat “slapped” me in the face as I thought of the world in which we live today!!! HOW in this world does another generation ( a group of people who have the same problems, attitudes, etc.) grow up not acknowledging the Lord or remembering the mighty things He has done for us??? I believe that the answer to this question is found within a generation ( the term of years between the birth of parents and the birth of their offspring) of people known as Christian parents, Christian grandparents, and just Christians in general not following the scriptural commandments of God throughout their generational time period. (just as Israel did)
Just as vs.11 states. “They abandoned the LORD….they went after other gods, worshiping the gods of the people around them …,” so we as a generation have followed in the Israelites foot steps. With which generation did this start??? Can anyone specifically place a time span on the generation that served the Lord throughout the lifetime of such a godly man as Joshua ( or has there been one since Joshua?) and the godly leaders who outlived that special individual–those who had seen all the great things the Lord had done for that particular time period as verse 7 applies to us as a nation. Now, since I’ve just written the above statement, I wonder, “Does it really matter which generation was responsible?” No, it just matters to me that at some point during history a generation of people abandoned the Lord and we are definitely seeing and feeling the effects of it today!!!
How has He been abandoned? He has not been loved with all our heart and with all our soul and with all our strength. His commandments are not upon our hearts; we have not impressed them on our children; we have not talked about them when we walk along the road, when we lie down and when we get up…. (Deut. 6:4-7 NIV) He has not become the King of Kings and Lord of Lords; He has not become the Savior of individuals. We have broken His commandment to have no other gods before Him and to not worship/bow down to other gods. ( Ex. 20; 3-4) Wow! Volumes could be written about the things, people, or beliefs we have put before God. [I learned so much about idols in my life from Wendy Pope’s Bible Study.] Oh, how I long for people to know the Jesus I FINALLY know and to love His Word as I FINALLY do at my old age. 😉
Did God choose to harden hearts of a generation as He did to Pharaoh? Is all of this generational problem and attitude of forgetting that our God is the very Creator of life and of the universe something to take lightly? Or is God doing unto us as He did unto Israel in 2:22: “I did this to test Israel – to see whether or not they would follow the ways of the LORD as their ancestors did.” I’m thinking I’ll have to wait until Judgment Day to know the answers, but will it really matter then??? Oh! I believe it will matter to those who have abandoned the Lord, went after other gods, worshiping the gods of the people around them. (Vs.11b), and who have done evil in His sight and served the images of _____ (whoever or whatever they serve) .(vs. 11a ).
So, what does this mean to us who have not abandoned our Lord and Savior, who have not chosen other gods or idols ( or we are still working with His Mighty Power to help us give them up-like shopping, sleeping, reading other books besides His Holy Word, etc….), and we are not being persuaded by the many “religions” that exist in our nation to give up who is “the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father but except through me.”??? (John 14:6) It means we have a lot of family members,(children and grandchildren), friends, church goers, and any lost souls in our generation with whom to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. We need to share the love of Jesus with everyone we encounter. We have to stop the cycle of this generation not believing in Jesus Christ!!
